Cabinet decision conveyed to Governor

BANGALORE: Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy on Friday told the Legislative Council that the Cabinet's decision to hold an election for the post of Chairman of the House had been conveyed to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi.

The Cabinet on Thursday decided to comply with the Governor's direction to the Government on the matter.

When Congress members asked for details, Mr. Shankaramurthy said it was now left to the Governor to announce the election timetable. — Staff Reporter

Meetings to be held on local body polls

BANGALORE: To ensure peaceful conduct of elections to 207 urban local bodies, including six city corporations, the State Election Commission has decided to hold preparatory meetings with Deputy Commissioners and City Corporation Commissioners from March 29 to April 7.

The meetings will discuss the voters list, polling booth staff and appointment of returning officers, said an official press note from the State Election Commission.

VTU to resume transfer of students

Belgaum: Visvesvaraya Technological University has announced that it will resume transfer of students from the disaffiliated engineering colleges from March 25. The decision follows a High Court order on the matter. According to a VTU release here on Friday, the transfer of students, both "eligible" (regular) and "not eligible" (repeater) students from the four disaffiliated colleges will be resumed and the re-allotment process conducted in Belgaum and Bangalore for the convenience of students. The students have been advised to report at the venue an hour before start of the counselling. The schedule has been announced on the VTU website, www.vtu.ac.in — Staff Correspondent

Job interviews for unemployed youth

Kolar: Interviews to select unemployed youth under the Suvarna Kayak Udyog Shikshana scheme has been organised at the industrial extension office in Malur on Saturday. Men and women with a minimum qualification of 7th standard are eligible to apply for jobs under the scheme. The interviews will begin at 10.30 a.m., a press release from the District Industrial Centre said. Over 1,000 candidates are expected to appear for the interviews. — Staff Correspondent

PCO operators to stage protest

BANGALORE: The Karnataka PCO Owners and Entrepreneurs Association will hold a meeting here on Sunday to discuss the problems faced by STD booth operators. The association will hold a demonstration on Monday in support of its demands.

Association president S.V. Rajendra told reporters here on Thursday that operators had invested heavily in their booths at a time when the average citizen had no access to STD at home. With the onset of PCO phones and 95-level connectivity through coin-operated phones, the STD booth operators were finding their ventures a losing proposition, he said.

Special puja at Shravanabelagola

HASSAN: It was 1,027 years ago that the gigantic Bahubali statue was installed at Shravanabelagola. To mark the occasion, a special puja was conducted on Thursday under the guidance of Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji. The swamiji told The Hindu that as part of the celebrations, a special puja would be conducted in all Jain temples till March 28. — Staff Correspondent

Wheat seized

HASSAN: The police on Thursday seized three lorries that were transporting wheat to Mandya from Hassan. These lorries were supposed to unload the wheat at the Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Corporation's godowns in Hassan, Holenarsipur and Alur. The wheat was to be supplied to people through fair price shops. Official reports said that in the past three months, 243 lorry loads of wheat were sent to all taluks in Hassan district from the godown of the Food Corporation of India, but they never reached the taluk centres. Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Corporation Manager Kannan said an inquiry would be held into the matter. — Staff Correspondent

NSV camp

Chitradurga: With an objective of promoting birth control methods among men, the district Health and Family Welfare Department will organise a three-day no scalpel vasectomy (NSV) camp from March 28. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, District Health Officer S. Rangaswamy said the camp would begin in Hosadurga and Holalkere taluks on March 28. On March 29, it would be held at Chalkere and Molkalmur, and on the final day in Hiriyur and Chitradurga taluks. — Staff Correspondent
