E-PARTNERSHIP: President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Don Mckinnon, Commonwealth Secretary General, at the inauguration of "Commonwealth Connects 2007: International e-Partnership Summit" in New Delhi on Friday.
NEW DELHI: Asserting that broadband connectivity is key to realising the stated socio-economic goals, President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on Friday asked the Commonwealth nations to formulate a uniform telecommunication policy for sharing resources, network and infrastructure. Speaking at the `Commonwealth Connects 2007 International e-Partnership Summit' here on Friday, Mr. Kalam said the focus of the summit should be on evolving guidelines for common telecommunication policy and facilitate its implementation through a Commonwealth co-ordination centre. It was through this network that people living in the villages and backward areas would be able to access modern education, healthcare services and employment opportunities, he added. Mr. Kalam also stressed the need for modernising education systems of the Commonwealth nations through skill development programmes. He asked the Commonwealth to identify gaps in educational standards of IT professionals in the global business scenario in IT, ITes and BPO services.
