KOLKATA: The West Bengal Government should declare by a notification that no industry would henceforth be built on forcibly acquired land, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee said here on Friday. "We are not against industries but all forcibly acquired land will have to be returned to farmers," Ms. Banerjee said. She also demanded introduction of amendments to the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 to ensure that there were no forcible acquisitions in future. Ms. Banerjee, who was supposed to lead a rally towards the Legislative Assembly under the aegis of the Paschim Banga Krishi Jami Raksha [West Bengal Save Farmland] Committee to protest against the Nandigram incidents, decided against the plan at the last moment. "We will not march to the Assembly which is the seat of the Chief Minister who has blood on his hands," said Ms. Banerjee, referring to the Nandigram violence on March 14 in which 14 people lost their lives. "Today, we are united and our movement has become a people's movement." Asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to act on Nandigram, she said: "if you can discuss the police atrocities committed in Gurgaon in Parliament, why can't you discuss the Nandigram issue there as well?"
