NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Friday held wide-ranging discussions with Vietnamese leaders in Hanoi. During his meeting with the President of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Triet, the Lok Sabha Speaker referred to the historical ties shared by both countries. Recalling the saga of the Vietnamese liberation struggle and India's support to the people of Vietnam, Mr. Chatterjee said the legendary leadership of President Ho Chi Minh was an inspiration to oppressed people everywhere. In the years since, India and Vietnam have been cooperating purposefully towards promoting a peaceful world order. Mr. Chatterjee pointed out that there exists immense potential for enhanced cooperation in areas like information technology, biotechnology, science and technology and space research, a Lok Sabha release said here. The Lok Sabha Speaker reiterated the need for parliamentary efforts to supplement governmental initiatives in cementing Indo-Vietnamese relations. He also offered India's assistance for Vietnam in training and orientation for parliamentary officials at the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. The President of Vietnam said the warm and cordial relations between the people have gone a long way in bringing the countries still closer.
