DHARWAD: Shifting of rare species from their indigenous location to foreign locations is not conservation, said S.K. Saidapur, Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, here on Friday. Inaugurating the two-day State-level conference on "Biodiversity and conservation, angiosperms with special reference to endangered, endemic and medicinal plants" organised at the JSS College, Dharwad, he said nature had its own wild strategy of conservation, which was different from the captive strategies of human beings. Elaborating on the deforestation, he expressed concern over the bio-degeneration caused due to the extensive destruction of the habitats. Taxonomist R.R. Rao released a souvenir brought out to mark the occasion. Presiding over the function, Ajit Prasad, principal of JSS College, expressed concern over the declining number of rare species of medicinal plants, angiosperms and so on. Quoting the words environmentalist John Sawhill on the responsibility of the present generation towards the posterity, he said: "A society is defined not only by what it creates but by what it refuses to destroy." G.R. Hegde, R.K. Mulgun and others were present. R. Parimala welcomed the gathering. Ratna Airsang proposed a vote of thanks.
