Faction feud raises its ugly head again

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Counselling of factionists taken up by Superintendent of Police M.S. Raveendra and the reported `compromise' arrived at in the presence of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy before the gram panchayat elections six months ago have failed to check factionalism in the district.

The killing of D. Venkatrami Reddy of Guttakindapalli in Mudigubba mandal by his rivals on Thursday is a pointer to this.

In a planned attack about half-a-dozen assailants waited till family members and servants left Venktrami Reddy alone in his orchards near the village and swooped on him first by hurling countrymade bombs and later with hunting sickles.

According to the police, the deceased had a long-running feud with one Venkataramanappa Shetty of the village earlier and with Srinivasa Reddy of Indukuru, the present President of Agriculture Market Committee of Kadiri and former Mandal Parishad President of Mudigubba. After the killing of Mr. Shetty in 1994 he had no rivalry with any group for some time.

fold. Three attempts were made on Venktrami Reddy's life in the last couple of years and in retaliation, Srinivasa Reddy was targeted on two occasions. Both of them are facing attempt to murder charges and are on bail.
