SHIMOGA: The former editor of Deccan Herald K.N. Hari Kumar said on Friday that the media's role in the changed scenario was to focus on new ideas to enable the empowerment of citizens using all the features brought in by technology. Delivering the key-note address at a two-day seminar on "Emergence of new media technologies and its cultural, economic and political implications," organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Kuvempu University at Jnana Sahyadri campus near here, he said: "The Internet by itself may not usher in new utopia. We have to create and reflect the ideology and culture of society." He said the new social and political context created the needs and features of the new technology, which should be the result of new social and ideological requirements. Observing that media was quite different from information technology, he said the new technologies in the field of media had brought text audio, video and multi media made portals available simultaneously on one platform. As the result, media companies were forced to re-examine their mission and core competence and redefine and refocus themselves. Registrar (Evaluation) of Kuvempu University Srikanth Kudige, who inaugurated the seminar, said it was wrong to consider the emergence of the new media technologies as a threat to the Indian culture. Chairman of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Rajendra Chenni said the media should not be seen merely as equipment but as the process of democratisation.
