Records take a tumble as New Zealand wins

  • Lou Vincent adjudged man of the match
  • Canada's total was its best in World Cups

GROS ISLET (AP): Brendon McCullum scored the record-fast World Cup 50 on Thursday and Lou Vincent added 101 to guide New Zealand for a 114-run win over Canada and a sweep of Group C.

New Zealand's innings of 363 for five was largely used as batting practice, with the side hitting 29 boundaries and 11 sixes.

Canada was bowled out for 249 in the last over. It was the highest total each country had registered at a World Cup.

Brendon McCullum (52), batting at No. 7, reached his 50 off 20 balls - one delivery faster than South African Mark Boucher's record.

Not to be outdone, Canada opener John Davison (53) punished the attack of Daryl Tuffey and Michael Mason to reach his 50 in 23 balls - the joint-third fastest in World Cup history.

Davison owns the record for fastest World Cup hundred, set in 2003.

When Davison fell, so did Canada's momentum but it still surpassed its previous best World Cup score of 228 for seven, set against England on Sunday. It was the last game in charge for Canada coach Andy Pick.-AP
