KULITHALAI: The Saraswathi Krishi Vigyan Kendra organised a training programme on floriculture for the benefit of self-help group members of Mudalaipatti and Serpalapatti villages. The Tamil Nadu Women's Development Corporation supported the programme that saw a large and eager participation of women. Inaugurating the workshop, Karur Collector T. N. Venkatesh urged the participants to concentrate not just on cultivation but also on post-harvest techniques and marketing aspects. M. Selvarajan of Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tiruchi, spoke on maintaining soil health, adopting proper cultivation practices, post-harvest technology and importance of contract or group farming for collective betterment of the farming community. P. Murugesan, Project officer, Women's Development Corporation, explained the importance of the workshop and the role the SHG members could play in the production and marketing of flowers, especially under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam. Vallal Kannan, Programme Coordinator, SKVK, explained the approaches for higher productivity and profitability in flower cultivation. He advised the farmers to opt for organic methods for better quality and price. D. Kirubhakaran, Managing Trustee, SKVK, urged the farmers to utilise the service and expertise of the KVK, especially on organic farming. Farmers' Discussion Group conveners A.V. Gopaladesikan of Kulithalai and R. Satheesh spoke on the use of KVK in the realm of women empowerment. K. Rengasamy, Joint Director of Agriculture; Chinnasamy Krishnan, Deputy Director of Agriculture; and S. Durai, Assistant Director of Agriculture were among those who participated. Home Science Specialist of the SKVK R. Anitha and Horticulture Specialist S. Senthil Kumar also spoke. Over 30 SHG members and a large number of farmers attended the workshop.
