State's move to establish Anna varsity at Tirunelveli hailed

P. Sudhakar

More funds sought to ensure high standards, enough facilities

TIRUNELVELI: While appreciating the State Government's decision to establish `Anna University - Tirunelveli' from the next academic year, academicians here have urged it to ensure hefty allocation of funds for the new entity in the years to come.

This would help the university match the standards and infrastructure facilities established on the university premises in Chennai.

The Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Cynthia Pandian, welcomed the proposal, saying that the technical university would significantly accelerate the growth of southern districts.

The president of Madurai Kamaraj - Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Teachers' Association, V. Ponnuraj, said that students of the southern districts would be immensely benefited out of this announcement only if the curriculum, infrastructure facilities and renowned faculty, all collectively considered to be the core strength of Anna University, Chennai, were ensured at the new premises.

Renaissance

"We demand allotment of more funds than the sum being allocated to Anna University, Chennai, as ours has to be established from the scratch.

"If it is done methodically, there would certainly be renaissance in the quality of technical education down south," Mr. Ponnuraj said.

Managements, faculty members and students of all engineering colleges here have welcomed the proposal.

Work on the construction of buildings for the new technical establishment is set to take off immediately after a formal inauguration.

220 acres

A total of 220 acres of land on the Palayamkottai - Seevalaperi Road (close to Melapaattam hillock and 3.80 km from Palayamkottai market) has been acquired by the Government.

Following a plea from former Palayamkottai MLA V. Karuppasamy Pandian, the then Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, had ordered the allocation of this land (which belonged to Department of Forests) for the establishment of a university in 1982.

However, the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was later established at Abhishekapatti on Tirunelveli - Tenkasi stretch, leaving the earmarked land unused.

Water supply

"Since pipes carrying drinking water to Palayamkottai from Manappadaiveedu pumping station pass through this site, the first and foremost problem of ensuring adequate quantity of drinking water to the proposed university has already been solved.

Moreover, the bypass road of the four-way track, connecting Tirunelveli - Madurai National Highway and Tirunelveli - Tuticorin Highway, is so close to this site.

Hence this site can be the best choice," Mr. Karuppasamy Pandian, who now represents Tenkasi Assembly constituency, said.

He suggested that the proposed software park could also be accommodated on the same campus.
