Buddha Nagar residents picket Naveen's house

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Demanding rehabilitation before eviction, hundreds of slum dwellers of Buddha Nagar area in the city staged a dharna at residence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in early Friday morning and refused to withdraw their agitation till their demand was fulfilled.

The slum-dwellers were aggrieved due to the eviction notice from East Coast Railway, which wanted to vacate the land that had been used by them for over 30 years.

As the slum-dwellers, mostly women, were unmoved for three hours in the morning, the officials finally had acceded to their demands. Mr. Patnaik assured them to discuss the matter with railway authorities about their rehabilitation.

"Government should rehabilitate us like it did in Raghunathnagar, Niladri Vihar, Patia and Bharatpur. We want the railway administration should respect to new Rehabilitation and Resettlement police of the state government," P Appa Rao, leader of Buddha Nagar slum, said.
