MANGALORE: Speakers at the inaugural function of a two-day national conference on "Updates in hospital administration" organised by the Department of Hospital Administration, Fr. Muller Medical College, here on Friday stressed the need for professionalism in hospital management. They also emphasised on the need to provide best service to people at an affordable cost. Inaugurating the seminar, N. Vinay Hegde, Chairman, Nitte Group of Institutions, said professionalism in hospital management had become a necessity. A professional set-up should ensure the smooth functioning of hospitals and provide top-end treatment to people at low cost. One had to balance this expectation while ensuring financial viability of the institution and see that interests of both were protected, he said. The future was ripe for medical tourism to emerge as a major thrust area, he said and added that professionals who were well versed and trained in these concepts should handle this task. C.A.K. Yesudian, Dean (Research and Development), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, who delivered the keynote address, said that India faced the burden of combating a dual disease caused by affluence and poverty. There was a need for optimum utilisation of human resources and hospital-related infrastructure to address these issues and provide affordable healthcare to the masses, he said. Planners had to address the issue of reaching out to the vast section of people who were outside the purview of formal healthcare system. Government had to increase its commitment to the healthcare system, he said. There was a need for public-private partnership in increasing efficiency levels of healthcare system, he added. Baptist Menezes, Director, Father Muller Charitable Institution, who presided over the function, said hospital managers had to adopt common sense approach while dealing with various vexing issues on a daily basis. Denis D' Sa, administrator of FMMCH, welcomed the gathering. L.L. Joshua, medical superintendent of the hospital, was present.
