Science needs to attract talent, says expert

Stella Maris College celebrates 60th anniversary

CHENNAI : If India is to keep up with the rest of the world in science and technology, we need to attract talent and find good faculty to teach them, said Rao Aiyagari, advisor and head, Science and Engineering Research Council, Department of Science and Technology.

He was speaking at the 60th anniversary celebrations of Stella Maris College here on Friday. Tracing the developments in science in the 60 years of free India, he said the country was in a phase of challenge and introspection. Though there has been some investment in science and technology by the private sector, the country still depended largely on the government as investor, he said. Mr. Aiyagari said in a country with such a large population, more researchers were needed. This could be achieved by rejuvenating research in universities and autonomous colleges. He said his department would be willing to assist Stella Maris College in this endeavour.

He said women's colleges needed to be good management models to make visible possibilities for women in science.

Former and retiring staff members were honoured and prizes distributed to students.
