Pravin fired at Pramod: Rekha Mahajan

Staff Reporter

She breaks down again after an hour of questioning

  • She is the first eyewitness in the trial
  • Identifies revolver allegedly used to commit the crime

MUMBAI : Rekha Mahajan, wife of the slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, told a court on Friday that Pravin Mahajan shot her husband on April 22 last year.

However, for the second consecutive day, she could not complete the examination, as she broke down again after an hour of questioning. She is the first eyewitness in the trial, which began on March 21.

On Thursday, before collapsing in the courtroom, she said Pravin Mahajan, the youngest brother of Pramod Mahajan, came to their house here in the morning and shortly afterwards she heard a "pat pat" sound in the living room.

On Friday, as Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam continued the examination, she narrated the sequence of events after she heard the sound.

She said that when she came out of the kitchen, she saw Pravin pointing a revolver at Pramod Mahajan. Pointing at Pravin, a teary-eyed Ms. Rekha Mahajan said in a shaky voice: "He, Pravin, shot at Mahajan with his revolver... I immediately shouted, `what have you done?' and ran to cover Pramod, who was bleeding. Then I pushed him [Pravin] while he was still trying to fire at Pramod Mahajan," she said.

Pramod Mahajan, who was bleeding, asked her to call Gopinath Munde. She asked domestic help Mahesh Wankhede to phone Poonam, their daughter, who lives nearby. She ran downstairs to call Mr. Munde and when Pradnya, Munde's wife (and Mahajan's sister) opened the door, she told her, ``that wretched fellow shot him."

Pradnya screamed and informed Mr. Munde. They all ran upstairs. It was Pramod Mahajan, who instructed her to bring something to tie his wounds, take him to the Hinduja hospital and also take his medicines with them, she said.

"He was conscious and was talking to Munde as he was being taken to hospital," she said.

"He asked Munde, `what crime have I committed that my brother Pravin shot me?"

Ms. Rekha Mahajan also identified the clothes and the revolver that was allegedly used.
