El Dorado (Argentina): The trial for the extradition of Ottavio Quattrocchi to India began in a local court here on Friday with the Italian businessman strongly opposing it saying it was a political case. But, the Central Bureau of Investigation expressed confidence that it would succeed in its efforts to get him. In what appears to be a process that may stretch at least up to four months, Judge Hachiro Doi of the First Court of El Dorado in the province of Misiones, about 1,500 km from the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires, asked Mr. Quattrocchi about the charges against him and whether he had objections to the extradition request. "I oppose the extradition and the court should also formally oppose it," he pleaded with the court during the hearing in which the media was kept out. Asked about the offences cited by the CBI against him, the 69-year-old accused in the Bofors payoffs case said "this case is not about criminal offences. It is about politics." The court adjourned hearing to an unspecified date when both Mr. Quattrocchi and the CBI will be asked to present evidence and arguments, a procedure expected to take between two and four months to complete.
