Nine bitten by dogs

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The stray dog menace reached great heights in the last two days with nine persons from the same area being bitten.

Even as residents of Somasandrapalya were yet to come out of Thursday's incident wherein Sneha (7) and Sheeja (5) were bitten by stray canines, seven others were reportedly bitten late on Thursday evening and on Friday.

The victims included Sathi (4), who was bitten on her nose. She was taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors stitched her wound.

Shreedhar (4) has been admitted to St. John's Hospital after he was bitten on his head.

Srinivasa Reddy, president of Haralur Welfare Association, told The Hindu that Shreedhar needed to undergo surgery. He said the BBMP was entirely responsible for the problem in the area.

"The BBMP men brought a van full of stray dogs, probably from the dog pounds after they were sterilised, and left them in our area on Wednesday and the problem started after that," he said.

When contacted, Dr L.T. Gayatri, Chief Health Officer of BBMP told The Hindu that the civic body had not yet started the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme in the newly added areas.

"This is not new as several cases are reported in our health centres every day. We will soon start the ABC programme in the new areas to tackle the menace there. The victims will be given free treatment if they go to the nearest BBMP health centres," Dr. Gayatri said.
