Six killed in Karol Bagh fire

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Six persons were killed and two sustained minor burns in a major fire that broke out in a four-storey residential building at Karol Bagh here on Friday morning. The victims have been identified as Palash Pal (34), Somen (32), Pradeep (26), Manoranjan (25), Siraj (23) and Surjeet (20). Gangpal and Palash were discharged after first aid.

According to the Fire Service Department, the fire broke out at 6-40 a.m. and four fire tenders took over an hour to put out the blaze. The fire tenders, however, faced difficulty in reaching the spot because of the narrow lanes leading to the building.

"All the eight persons were sleeping inside a room on the first floor when the fire broke out. Though two of them managed to escape, the others were trapped and died of asphyxia and burn injuries. Electricity passing through the iron door made it difficult even for the firemen to rescue them," said a police officer.

The victims, all natives of West Bengal, worked in a jewellery moulding unit in the area and stayed in the rented accommodation.
