Hold talks with ULFA: conclave

Sushanta Talukdar

Calls for talks on sovereignty issue

  • Assembly should prevail upon Centre to release militant leaders
  • Support extended to Centre-NSCN(I-M) peace talks

GUWAHATI: The two-day Jaitya Mohasabha (national conclave), held under the aegis of the People's Committee for Peace Initiative (PCPI), on Friday adopted a resolution urging the Government either to immediately hold talks with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on the sovereignty issue or conduct a plebiscite on the issue.

    ``Halt Army operations''

The conclave also adopted seven other resolutions, including one demanding the Centre to release the five jailed ULFA leaders in accordance with the third round of parleys between the Government and the ULFA-appointed People's Consultative Group (PCG) and halt the Army operations to facilitate direct talks with the militant outfit.

In another resolution, the conclave urged all parties in the State Assembly to adopt a resolution to pressure the Centre to release the militant leaders, halt the Army operations to facilitate direct talks with ULFA for a negotiated solution to the conflict.

Expressing concern over the fast-unto-death by the wives of five top ULFA leaders, who went missing during the Bhutan crackdown, the conclave urged the Government to intervene and inform the families of missing leaders about their whereabouts.
