Bangalore: While for some it was a time to rejoice, for Abdul Rehman Shariff of M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, who received a gold medal at the RGUHS convocation on Saturday, success was not so sweet. Dr. Rehman has got a high rank in the Postgraduate Entrance Test of the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K). "I have got a seat in MS (Ophthalmology) and Orthopaedics in a private medical college, but I cannot pay the high fees they are demanding," he said. "People with money are buying the seats while merit students like me who come from the middle class do not stand a chance." Sharanya Ajith Kumar of Government Dental College, Bangalore, who bagged six gold medals, was in seventh heaven. "Strive for perfection and settle for excellence," is her motto, which has brought her so far, she said. "I want to specialise in either orthodontics or preventive dentistry and will be choosing a college soon to study further," she added.
