Doctors urged to help check malpractice

Bangalore: It is the responsibility of doctors to check malpractice in the medical profession, according to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of Art of Living.

Delivering his address at the 9th annual convocation of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) here on Saturday, he said, "It is unfortunate that unethical practices such as illegal organ trading and female foeticide have come into this noble profession; the responsibility to check such malpractices is on you."

He and D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmastala, were awarded Doctor of Science degrees (honoris causa) on the occasion.

Reading out a report on the activities of the university, Vice-Chancellor P.S. Prabhakaran said it was proposed to have a Health City attached to the university at Ramanagaram.

In his address, Mr. Heggade recommended Art of Living training to government hospital staff so that they are more humane while dealing with patients.

Gold medallists

Lakshmi Devi of J.J.M. Medical College, Davangere, and Sharanya Ajit Kumar of Government Dental College, Bangalore, bagged six gold medals each, followed by Shilpa H.D. of Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore, who won five gold medals. The other gold medal winners are Vikas Satyananda, St. John's Medical College, Bangalore; Kesarwani Siddharth Surendra Kumar and Raghavendra Murthy P., J.J.M. Medical College, Davangere; Soumya K.S., Mysore Medical College, Mysore; Raghavendra, Bangalore Medical College; Vijay R. Tubaki, J.N. Medical College, Belgaum; Amulya, K.V.G. Dental College, Sullia; Rejita Andrews, St. John's Nursing College, Bangalore; and Thejaswini, Government Ayurvedic Medical College, Bangalore (two gold medals each).
