Kakinada: The incidence of TB and also the deaths on account of it in East Godavari district are on a decrease during the last four years, according to Collector M.Subrahmanyam. Flagging off the rally at the Government General Hospital here to mark the World TB Day celebrations, he said the effective implementation of the revised national tuberculosis control programme (RNTCP) under the directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) strategy had yielded good results.
Awareness
He said awareness needed to be created among the people on the dreaded disease so that it can be controlled effectively. Giving out the situation in the district, he said, while 7,346 cases were detected in 2005 it has come down to 6,835 cases last year and during last two months the cases reported were 1,014. Similarly the TB deaths have come down from 8.7 per cent in 2004 to 7.6 per cent in 2005 and to six per cent in the year 2006.
Rally
The rally later passed through the main streets and concluded at the Government General Hospital. Hospital superintendent Suryakumari, DMHO Jayaram, Additional DMHO Pavan Kumar, Nursing superintendent Mary Bai, District immunisation officer B. Phanindra and District TB control officer N.
