PG medical counselling

VIJAYAWADA: Counselling for provisional selection of candidates for admission into post-graduate medical and diploma courses for 2007-08 will begin at Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences from April 4. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The seats will be displayed on the university website (http://203.199.178.93).

Physically challenged candidates of all areas should report at the university campus at 8 a.m. on April 4. University registrar P. Jayakar Babu that the candidates should come prepared to stay for one or more days during the counselling process.

Six injured in clash

KADAPA: Rival groups opened fire a with country-made firearm and hurled bombs at each other resulting in severe injuries to six persons in Gangannapalle village in Thondur mandal in Pulivendula constituency. The clash followed an altercation in gram sabha convened for selecting beneficiaries for Indiramma second phase.

Police recovered four cartridges from the site. Case was booked against 31 persons. All are at large. — Staff Reporter

Maoist `aides' held

ADILABAD: Asifabad police on Saturday arrested six alleged sympathisers of Maoists from Wankidi mandal on charge of supplying explosives to them with an intention to kill policemen in 2005. Ratnam Gopi, Durgam Shankar, Ada Shankar, Uruvetha Seetaram, Jugnaka Bhim and Atram Bhupal were produced at a press conference by Kagaznagar DSP Devadanam. — Staff Reporter

New rail reservation

HYDERABAD: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu will inaugurate the computerised passenger reservation system at Machilipatnam on March 26. He will also flag off DEMU shuttle between Machilipatnam and Vijayawada at Machilipatnam the same day. — Special Correspondent

Scientist honoured

TIRUPATI: P.V. Reddy, Associate Director of Research, Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Tirupati was selected as the 'Best Agricultural Scientist' for the year 2005 and honoured with the 'Sri Neelakantapuram Kaverappa gold medal' at ANGRAU's 39th annual convocation at Hyderabad. He was chosen for his pioneering research that led to the breeding of drought-tolerant groundnut varieties such as Abhaya, APNL-TCGS 888 and 913. — Staff Reporter

'Napping' Minister

HYDERABAD: Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Koneru Ranga Rao was literally caught napping in the Assembly. Sathenapalle MLA Y. Venkateswara Reddy raised a question pertaining to the Municipal Administration Department. After speaking for five minutes, Mr. Reddy awaited a reply from the Minister. Soon, Mr. Ranga Rao, who was taking a cat nap, was alerted by his colleague Ministers. Amid giggles of a members, the Minister said "The issue raised by the member has been noted down and action would be taken." Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy remarked in a lighter vein: "Yes, the matter is being deeply noted." — Special Correspondent

Ugadi Puraskar for V-C

TIRUPATI: Delhi Telugu Academy has selected S. Jayarama Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Venkateswara University, for the `Ugadi Puraskar 2007'. The award will be presented to him at a function in FICCI auditorium, New Delhi on Sunday. - Staff Reporter

Power cut in towns

TIRUPATI: The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has slapped a three-hour power cut in all municipal towns in Chittoor district with immediate effect.

According to a release by Superintending Engineer (Tirupati Operation circle), K. S. Y. Sharief, power cut will be in force from 6.30 a.m. - 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. - 5.30 p.m. every day in Chittoor, Srikalahasti, Madanapalle, Punganur, Palamaner, Puttur and Nagari towns. - Staff Reporter

Red sanders seized

TIRUPATI: The Chittoor East sleuths of the Forest Department seized 25 red sander logs weighing 696 kg along with a Tata Sumo vehicle at Autonagar on the outskirts of the city in the late hours of Thursday.

On sighting the guards, the driver parked the vehicle and fled the scene under the cover of darkness. The value of the logs and the vehicle was estimated at Rs.1.5 lakhs. - Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy inaugurated a cool drinking water outlet put up by APUWJ district unit near Chennur bus stand here on Saturday. Man murdered

KADAPA: Boggala Gangi Reddy (55) was hacked to death allegedly by his relative Yelamakuri Mallesh in agricultural fields in Chamundeswaripet village in Siddhavatam mandal on Saturday. Suspecting that Gangi Reddy had an illicit relationship with his wife, Mallesh fatally attacked the former while he was watering fields, according to police. - Staff Reporter

Killed in accident

KADAPA: An ex-serviceman P. David Wilson Sunder Raj (33) of Christian Lane in Kalasapadu town was fatally knocked down near Kalasapadu police station by an APSRTC bus bound from Porumamilla to Giddalur on Saturday, according to the police. The body was sent to Badvel Government hospital for post-mortem. - Staff Reporter

ZP meet adjourned

KURNOOL: The general body of Zilla Parishad was adjourned without transacting any business here on Saturday. ZP Chairman L. Venkata Swamy announced adjourning of the house, as most of the MLAs could not make it to the meeting on account of Assembly session. DCMS general body meet held

Vijayawada: The Krishna District Cooperative Marketing Society (DCMS) Limited has urged its affiliated organisations to rise to the occasion by achieving the targets set by it. The DCMS, at its annual general body meeting on Saturday, emphasised the need for coordinated and concerted efforts in accomplishing self-reliance.

TB control unit for tribals

VIZIANAGARAM: Collector B. Kishore has said that a TB control unit will be opened exclusively for tribals in the Agency area on April 1.

Speaking on the occasion of World TB Day here on Saturday, Dr. Kishore said that with the introduction of DoT, the number of cases dropped from six to 3.5 per cent. He said patients cured of TB would be drafted for propagating and creating awareness among schoolchildren that "TB is curable."

CPI(M) stages rasta roko

VIZIANAGARAM: CPI(M) workers resorted to rasta roko on Saturday at various places in the district to protest against the arrest of party secretary M. Krishna Murty and Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangam district general secretary M. Suryanarayana on Friday. The party had been supporting the agitation by Tarakarama Theertha Sagar Project Vyathirekha Porata Samiti. The leaders were remanded to custody till March 26.

Meanwhile, the Collector urged samiti members to attend a meeting in his chambers at 11 am on Sunday.

BSNL offer to net-savvy

Kakinada: The BSNL will extend unlimited Internet access facility at a monthly rent of Rs. 249 to those who opt for landline connection exclusively for the Internet, according to DGM Telecom. He said that the consumer need not pay installation charges or security deposit for the connection. Similarly, two months rebate at Rs. 250 each would be extended on Internet access charges.

Training for police recruits

Kakinada: The nine-month training for the 242 persons selected for the post of APSP constable from East Godavari district will commence on March 25, according to Superintendent of Police B. Srinivasulu. Among the recruits, 42 will be given training at the training centre in Chintalavalasa near Vizianagaram while the remaining at the training centre at Mamunur in Warangal district.
