Number of outposts up: Director-General

NEW DELHI: Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Director-General Tilak Kak on Saturday said the organisation is now well-prepared to guard the country's 2,450-km-long border along Nepal and Bhutan with its 20 newly raised battalions.

Addressing the annual press conference of the force at Ghitorni here, Mr. Kak said the number of border outposts had gone up substantially with the raising of the new battalions and 210 more outposts would be created within a year.

The work has already started showing results and smuggled goods worth Rs. 24 crore and arms, ammunition and modern telecom instruments have been seized by SSB personnel along the border and 1,796 criminals have been arrested, said Mr. Kak highlighting the major achievements of the force during 2006.

He said a wide area network for all the 582 border outposts and a remote sensing surveillance system would soon be established at the SSB Academy in Srinagar. Moreover, he said, "SSB is soon going to establish a Dog Training Centre at Palampur in Himachal Pradesh. There is also a proposal to establish 13 Animal Transport Units."

National integration

SSB has also organised 233 film and documentary shows, 129 rallies and 154 sports events along the border areas to promote national integration. A Wives' Welfare Association has been registered and 2,760 children have been given scholarships for higher studies by the force, he said.
