NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan on Saturday accused the Union Urban Development Ministry of making misleading announcements about regularising 1,500 unauthorised colonies since the Delhi Jal Board, functioning under the Delhi Government, has in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court held these very colonies responsible for pollution in the Yamuna.

Stating that the two contentions have exposed the dual character of the Congress, the BJP leader demanded that the Central and Delhi Government immediately issue a White Paper on the unauthorised colonies and cleaning of Yamuna so that people might know the truth. Dr. Vardhan said the DJB lawyer had informed the court that while the sewage treatment plants were working properly, the unauthorised colonies were a great hindrance because their sewage goes directly into the Yamuna. He questioned why the Yamuna was still dirty despite Rs 1,700 crore having being spent on its cleaning and accused the Delhi Government of not adopting scientific methods to clean the river.

Meanwhile, addressing meetings in the run-up to the MCD elections, the party leader in charge of Delhi affairs Vijay Kumar Malhotra also blamed the Congress for the poor condition of roads, water supply and sanitation.

Prof. Malhotra said while in most parts of Delhi large potholes exist on the roads and this often leads to accidents, the water supply was a cause of daily concern for the people.

Meanwhile, the party announced that a Gujjar leader, Mukhiya Gujjar, had joined it after resigning from the Samajwadi Party along with a large number of his supporters. During the day, the election office of the BJP candidate from Rohini Central and Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh president Vijender Gupta was inaugurated in the presence of party general secretary Pawan Sharma.
