HELPING THE NEEDY: Rajiv Gandhi Foundation Chairperson Sonia Gandhi with special children after presenting them hearing aids at her residence in New Delhi on Saturday. Photo: Sandeep Saxena
NEW DELHI: Congress president and Rajiv Gandhi Foundation chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday handed over several devices to differently-abled persons to enable them to lead a normal life. Besides presenting 70 motorised vehicles to physically challenged persons, Ms. Gandhi awarded hearing aids to 40 hearing-impaired children. All the children were aged between three and 15 years, belong to the lower income group and live in different areas of Delhi. Since hearing is a prerequisite for developing normal speech, the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation intends to help these children through distribution of hearing devices. Underlying this programme is the belief that providing mobility to the physically challenged persons helps integrate them into the mainstream of society. Through this programme, the Foundation has brought hope and a promise of a brighter future to 700 differently-abled persons. This year's awards will help students pursue their education, employed persons to sustain their jobs and self-employed individuals to expand their businesses.
