`CM house unsafe'

Khanduri refuses to move to new address

Dehra Dun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister B. C. Khanduri is not moving into his official residence as a central agency has declared the British Raj building unsafe for staying.

Khanduri, a former Major General, is presently staying at Bijapur Guest House and would be shifting to a new official residence next month.

"I will not shift to the old bungalow," Khanduri said.

Khanduri's decision came after Roorkee-based Central Building and Road Institution declared the Cantonment Road building as unsafe following a survey.

A detailed report prepared by CBRI in this regard has already been submitted to the Government. The Government is planning to demolish the building, a top official said.

"We are now constructing a new house for the Chief Minister and it would be ready by next month," the official said.

Tucked away in the sylvan surroundings of the posh Cantonment area of Dehra Dun, the new building is situated close to the Raj Bhavan.

While the State's first Chief Minister Nityanand Swami used the building only during daytime, his BJP colleague who succeeded him B. S. Koshiyari, never relished the idea of shifting to the official residence. Koshiyari used to consider the Cantonment building as jinxed.
