Cops join errant car occupants in abusing JNU teacher

Parul Sharma

NEW DELHI: All that a gutsy citizen gets for raising his or her voice against a wrongdoing is abuse and insults. At least that is what a teacher of Jawaharlal Nehru University here was subjected to when she confronted the occupants of a speeding car that hit a pregnant cow on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road in the Capital over the weekend.

The Chairperson of the Centre for Study of Law and Governance at JNU, Amita Singh, was "threatened" and "abused" by the father-son duo whose vehicle hit the cow. They were then allegedly joined by a head constable and constable who asked her to leave the place instead of "meddling in the affairs of men".

"While on my way from Gurgaon to Chhattarpur on Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, I saw a car speeding at about 100 kilometres per hour. It even jumped a red light at Arjungarh Air Force Station on this road. As I proceeded forward, I saw a cow lying seriously injured on the divider and this very car parked nearby,'' said Dr. Amita Singh.

"I got out of my car and saw the two occupants of the other car standing near it. When I walked up to them to point out their mistake, the younger of the two abused me and then the elder one, who was the father, came and pushed me physically,'' she added.

Though two policemen had already reached the spot, Dr. Singh said that rather than stopping the duo from "physically assaulting" her, Head Constable Satbir Singh said "this is what happens when you interfere in the affairs of men".

Thereafter Dr. Singh called an animal rights activist for help. She also lodged a complaint against the father, J. L. Bhatia. The Station House Officer of the Mehrauli police station confirmed that a complaint had been received and the matter was being investigated.
