NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma on Saturday said the party had selected a balanced team of highly respected and renowned leaders as candidates for the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections. Addressing a press conference at DPCC headquarters here, Mr. Sharma said the party had sought to provide a completely new and lively picture of MCD of the future by selecting a large number of new and young candidates. The effort was to place "Stree Shakti" (woman power) alongside "Yuva Shakti" (youth power) in these polls. The PCC president said while six of the candidates were only up to 22 years of age, 134 were between 22 years and 35 years, and they constituted 51 per cent of the 272 nominated candidates. At the same time, he said, experience had also been given due respect and 47 per cent of the candidates were in the age group of 36 to 60 years. And while there were 92 reserved seats for women, he said the party had given tickets to 97 women candidates. On the working profile of the candidates, Mr. Sharma disclosed that while 153 of them (56 per cent) were traders, 68 were social workers, 16 teachers, seven lawyers, four each former government servants and retired people, six private service people, five students, two each farmers, doctors, journalists and professors while one was an artist. To see to it that knowledgeable people made it to the Municipal Corporation, Mr. Sharma said over 50 per cent of the candidates chosen by the party were graduates or post-graduates.
