PUDUKOTTAI: As many as 8,976 women self-help groups and 186 youths self-help groups have been functioning successfully in the district, the Collector, S. J. Chiru, said. These SHGs have saved a sum to the tune of Rs.69 crore so far. A total of 7,753 women SHGs have so far been extended financial assistance to the tune of Rs.66.32 crore under various Government schemes, Mr. Chiru said while speaking at a meeting of the coordination committee of the Mahalir Thittam programmes here on Saturday. In the recent past, 100 SHGs in urban areas and 75 SHGs in panchayats selected for the implementation of the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Scheme, have been formed. Over 600 members of the women SHGs have undergone entrepreneurship development training, including in the trades of producing food products, nursing assistants, lab technicians etc. The best panchayat level federation (PLF) was being given a special incentive of Rs.10,000 and in the first phase 32 PLFs have been sanctioned the same. He appealed to the women members of the SHGs to improve upon the group activity and come above the poverty line.The project officer, Mahalir Thittam, Rajamohan, the project office, District Rural Development Agency, A. Natarajan, Lead Bank Manager, C. Sudhakar, Assistant General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Kesavamurthy, were among those who spoke.
