TIRUCHI : A 20 per cent growth in tourist arrivals in Tamil Nadu notwithstanding the fact that only 10 per cent of potential has been exploited so far is indicative of the bright prospects for tourism industry, V. Irai Anbu, Secretary, Tourism and Culture Department, said on Friday. Endowed with several aspects of tourist importance such as verdant vegetation, hill stations, lengthy coastline and antiquities, the State has been able to attract many tourists. The hospitality industry has a vital role in promoting tourism, Mr. Irai Anbu said addressing the 26th annual day celebrations of the State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology here. The attention that the hospitality industry accords to tourists creates an indelible impression of the culture of the place and behaviour of people thereby prompting visitors to publicise their pleasant experiences through word of mouth. Better marketing of ancient monuments in the State and accordance of attention to visitors with a pleasing attitude are essential to realise the objectives of attracting many tourists on a larger scale, lengthening their stay and making them spend more. An increase in the spending capacity is advantageous for growth of tourism, he said. Mr. Irai Anbu urged students to get beyond knowledge and keep their senses aware with an open mind to the happenings around in order to derive rich experiences and imbibe best practices. Professionals in the hospitality industry should develop influencing personality by approaching tourists with humbleness. Mr. Irai Anbu later honoured academic achievers and winners of extra-curricular competitions with medals and cash awards. Presiding over, K.S. Nagarajan, Principal, Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Chennai, said that in an ever-changing world it was necessary to continue learning newer developments to be in the reckoning of competition. He wanted the alumni to have an active association with the institution, share their rich experiences and enhance the brand name of their alma mater. Offering felicitations, the Registrar of National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi, T. Suriyakumar, said that students should be prepared to adapt to the requirements of the outside world. Presenting the annual report, the Principal of SIHMCT L.V. Kumar, said the achievements of students and faculty development initiatives have facilitated the Institute's focus on global standards.
