Attack on Vice-Chancellor comes in for criticism

Staff Reporter

`Allegation of her involvement in conversions baseless'

HYDERABAD: The Christian Democratic Movement (CDM) on Saturday condemned the attack on Vice-Chancellor of Padmavathi Mahila University Veena Noble Das over alleged involvement in religious conversions in the university campus, which led to suicide of a post-graduate student of the university.

Addressing a press conference, CDM president P.A. Melchizedek termed the allegations as baseless and said that Uma Maheswari, the student who committed suicide, was a `regular' church visitor since several years.

There were no attempts by the Vice-Chancellor in forcing her to go for religious conversion, he added.

Following the suicide, ABVP and BJP activists allegedly attacked the VC, which is absurd and in protest against this attack, a rally and a public meeting would be organised on March 30 at Tirupati, he said.
