Corporators allege irregularities, complain against official apathy

  • Corporators seek monthly general body meeting
  • Officials grilled over encroachments and parks

KARIMNAGAR: Noisy scenes over alleged irregularities and lackadaisical attitude of the officials in responding to the people's woes rocked the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation general body meeting, which was convened after a gap of one-year on Saturday.

Cutting across party lines, all the coporators raised a voice of protest demanding the authorities to convene monthly general body meetings to discuss the problems of the corporation and solve the grievances of the people. The corporators expressed concern over lethargy on the part of engineering, town planning and sanitation department authorities. After heated arguments, Mayor D. Shankar assured to convene bi-monthly general body meetings to discuss and solve local issues. The opposition corporators grilled municipal officials over encroachments and poor maintenance of parks in the town. Responding to the protests, the Mayor said that he would convene a special general body in the first week of April to exclusively discuss about parks and their protection. To a query raised by TDP corporator G. Kamalakar about a huge construction, which was of poor quality in the posh Jyothinagar locality in the town, the Mayor instructed the authorities to evict the inmates with the help of the police and demolish the structure.

Responding to a plea on providing a vehicle to the deputy Mayor, the corporators opposed the decision. They argued that there was no need for a vehicle in Karimnagar town, which had a radius of only five 5 km. Besides, about 29 corporators also signed a memorandum opposing it. Succumbing to the pressure, the authorities shelved the plan of providing a vehicle to deputy Mayor.
