Directors: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris THIS IS a sweet little movie that makes you laugh and cry. Little Miss Sunshine is so heart warming, you just want to hug yourself with joy. There is Richard Hoover, a failed motivational speaker, who believes that winning is everything. His father has been kicked out of the retirement home. Sherly is Richard's frazzled wife whose brother, Frank, the greatest Proust scholar in the country who is also gay, has just slit his wrists as his lover dumped him. Then there is 15-year-old Dwayne who has taken an oath of silence and has not spoken for the last nine months and finally there is seven-year-old Olive who is taking part in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in California. The family takes off in a bright yellow VW bus and the road as a metaphor for life is played out in a delightfully bittersweet manner. There is a death, there are the usual automobile troubles, disappointments and the crazy things one does when cooped for long stretches of time with mind-alteringly different personalities. Everything comes out fine in the end as the dysfunctional family get together and boogie on stage. The film works because none of the homilies are shoved down your throats. The cast is superb. From Collette as Sheryl to Kinnear as Richard and of course Breslin is delightful as Olive as his Arkin as Grandpa. The movie proves once again that while there are just so many emotions and tropes you can work with the difference comes in the presentation.
