LIFE OF A MAESTRO: Playwright Girish Karnad releasing `Violin from the Heart' a biographical film on L Subramaniam in Bangalore on Saturday. Photo: K. Bhagya Prakash
Bangalore: "Violin From the Heart," a biographical film on violinist L. Subramaniam was launched here on Saturday. Launching the album, chief guest for the evening, playwright Girish Karnad said that Indians who have had the opportunity to live through the second half of the 20th century have received a great privilege since this period has been one of the high points in the recent history of Indian music. "Indian music has always had great people," said Mr. Karnad, "but I don't think there has been such a profusion and richness at anytime in the recent past." Pointing out that the music of this period has benefited from the challenge thrown at it from Western music, he added that while many musicians prefer to pretend that Western music does not exist, few greats have taken on the music and turned it into something of their own. While Pt. Ravi Shankar is one such example, Dr. Subramaniam is definitely the other, he said. Dr. Subramaniam, for his part, paid tribute to his father and guru, V. Lakshminarayana, saying that it was through the latter's efforts that the violin could be brought into its current solo instrument status, rather than remain an accompanying instrument.
Concerts
With this year marking the 15th Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival, he announced, 15 major concerts have been planned around the world, including at Eastern European countries such as Romania and Poland, where the festival has not been before. "Violin From The Heart" is the first biographical film and rare documentary on Dr. Subramaniam and has been directed by Jean Henri Meunier. The launch of the DVD was followed by an evocative performance by Dr. Subramaniam, along with his son Lakshminarayana (Ambi) Subramaniam.
