TAMBARAM: Honouring of doctors and formal opening of a renovated Children's Park marked World Tuberculosis Day at the Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine in Tambaram Sanatorium on Saturday. Among those honoured were V. Rangaswami, who served as the hospital Superintendent between 1971 and 1983, K. Seshagiri, former RMO, Alawandar, a former surgeon, and G. Bageeswari who served in the hospital. S.Rajasekaran, Superintendent of the hospital was present. Region Three of Lions Club International as part of its District Governor Programme's Image Building project recently adopted the Children's Park. Following this, new equipment were installed, repairs carried out to the existing facilities and rusted playthings removed, said A. Marianathan, region chairperson of the club. On Saturday, the renovated park was thrown open for child patients admitted to the hospital. According to officials, about 25 children were admitted as in-patients and receiving treatment for TB and HIV/AIDS. Four per cent of the around 30,000 outpatients coming every year to the hospital were children.
Facilities offered
The hospital had specialists, volunteers and experts who spent the day with the children, teaching them nursery rhymes in Tamil and English. A person to teach various languages was also employed, officials said, adding that in the evening the children would be allowed to play for a while. The renovated park would bring cheer to the children and the dedication of the new facility on World TB Day was apt, they said.
