Chennai: The second phase of distribution of free colour televisions here began on Saturday. Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin launched the distribution at the Thousand Lights constituency. He said 32,340 sets were to be distributed in the city in the second phase. In the first phase, 3,472 sets were distributed. On the full implementation of the scheme, 1.40 lakh TV sets (10,000 per constituency) would have been distributed in Chennai.
Scheme resumes
The launch of the second phase of distribution Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi inaugurated it for the rest of the State sometime ago was delayed in Chennai because of the Corporation by-polls, pointed out Mr. Stalin. Mr. Karunanidhi would distribute TV sets in the Chepauk constituency on March 27. Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan launched the second phase of distribution in the Triplicane constituency, Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi in the Egmore constituency, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy in the Royapuram and Anna Nagar constituencies, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran in the Park Town and Purasawalkam constituencies, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu in the Saidapet constituency and Mayor M. Subramanian in the Mylapore constituency.
