TIRUCHI: A delegation of the District Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association will call on PWD Minister Durai Murugan shortly to impress upon him the need for filing a review petition with the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, in the wake of the omission of summer release of water through 17 irrigation channels of the middle delta region for irrigating the perennial crops. A decision to this effect was taken at an urgent meeting of the Association here on Saturday, which was attended by farmers' representatives from Tiruchi, Karur, and Musiri. Association president G. Kanagasabai said that non-release of water during summer through these channels would affect not only farmers but also sugar and paper industries. The State Government used to issue special orders for the discharge during summer, safeguarding the interests of farmers. Executive president V. Rajaram said that plantain, sugarcane and turmeric were the major crops in the Cauvery delta. The setting up of the National Research Centre for Banana near Tiruchi by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research testified to the vast extent of plantain under cultivation in the arc of the delta.
Entitled to get
Technical Advisor N. Natarajan said that the region was entitled for summer release, as perennial crops, particularly sugarcane, were being cultivated here for several decades, much ahead of the 1924 agreement. In the meanwhile, the Madras High court has posted the hearing on a petition, filed in 2002, by the Thottiyam Taluk Irrigation and Banana Cultivators' Association, pleading for irrigation waters through the channels, for next week. The Association also decided to submit the technical details to the High Court, Mr. Rajaram said.
