4 acres to be landscaped; amusement equipment to be set up

TIRUCHI: The picnic spot of Puliancholai will soon get a facelift and developed into a tourist attraction. The Union Tourism Ministry has sanctioned Rs.97.02 lakh under the `Product, Infrastructure and Destination Development Scheme' for improving tourist amenities at the verdant picnic spot situated on the foothills of Kolli Hills.

The foundation stone for the development works to be taken up under the scheme was laid by the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, A. Raja, on Saturday.

The Tourism Ministry has already released Rs.77.62 lakh as the first instalment under the project. A few rest sheds would be constructed, and a pathway laid to the bathing area.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Raja said that the project would give a major thrust to the development of Puliancholai into a major tourist attraction in Tiruchi district.

The Minister said the Thuraiyur Municipality would soon be taken up for development under the `Urban Infrastructure Scheme for Small and Medium Towns.' Proposals worth about Rs.10 crore for improving the infrastructure if the town were under consideration.

Transport Minister K.N.Nehru assured that steps would be taken to set up a few industries in the region. A sugar factory with a cogeneration power plant could be established in the area, he said.
