Medical care for the poor at doorstep

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Though non-governmental organisations are vying with one another to reach out to the people who are living with HIV/AIDS, services are more often concentrated in urban areas. To bridge the rural-urban divide and provide medical services at the doorstep of the poor and the needy, the Madurai branch of the Family Planning of India has come out with a `Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Management Project' that comprises both mobile and static units.

The mobile unit will provide access to sexual and reproductive health/HIV services for the poorest of the poor at their door steps, coordinate with primary health centres, promote home-based care and sensitise the community to the needs of people living with HIV, said the FPAI Manager, Louis S. Paulraj. The Rs. 1.3 crore project would be funded by Innovation fund - International Planned Parenthood Federation, London. The mobile units, comprising a medical officer, staff nurse, mid wife, counsellor and a lab technician, would reach the villages and offer nutritional and medical services to people, he said.

Even before the van reached the villages the outreach workers would organise people living with HIV/AIDS who would be treated for their opportunistic diseases, he said. Any person who wanted to test blood could just step into the vehicle and avail themselves of the services. Three outreach workers would work in each block.

The project would concentrate on Tirupparankundram, Vadipatti, Chellampatti, Usilampatti and Sedapatti, Tirumangalam and T. Kallupatti blocks of Madurai district.
