KOCHI: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the Government is committed to taking forward the programmes adopted by the first Communist Government of the State led by E.M.S. Namboodiripad aimed at comprehensive development of Kerala. Inaugurating the E.M.S. memorial meeting organised by the E.M.S. Sahakarana Library of Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank at Kakkanad on Saturday to mark the ninth death anniversary of E.M.S. Namboodiripad and the golden jubilee of the first Communist Government, Mr. Vijayan said that the steps adopted by that Government created hope for the people. Mr. Vijayan pointed out that the major challenge faced by the E.M.S. Government was to conduct administration remaining within the limits of the rules and laws framed by a bourgeoisie system. The greatness of E.M.S. Namboodiripad was that he was able to meet this challenge effectively though there were no models for achieving this, Mr. Vijayan said. The reforms implemented by that Government including the abolition of the practice of evicting tenants from the land they were cultivating and ensuring protection to the jobs of teachers had long-standing impact, Mr. Vijayan said. Likewise, a thorough change in the attitude of the police was also brought about. The police were discouraged from interfering in labour disputes. Mr. Vijayan said that all the developments achieved by the State had their foundations in the first Communist Government. Even the concept of development with the active participation of people was put forward by EMS, Mr. Vijayan said. It was his vision that later became the People's Plan Campaign. The question he put forward whether political parties with different standpoints could come together on issues related to development and people's welfare was still relevant, Mr. Vijayan said. Veteran CPI(M) leader P. Govinda Pillai made the keynote address. K. Chandran Pillai, MP, presided. M.M. Monayi, MLA, chairman of the library, welcomed the audience and M.E. Assainar, director of the District Cooperative Bank and member, District Panchayat, proposed a vote of thanks.
Book released
Mr. Govinda Pillai released a collection of poems by Chemmanam Chacko titled Ottayante Choonduviral with Travancore Cochin Chemicals managing director Sukumaran Nair receiving the first copy.
