A stand-alone case: Centre

New Delhi: The Centre on Saturday sought to play down criticism of its relief package for the victims of the 2002 sectarian violence in Gujarat and said it was not considering compensation in any other riot case. "This [Gujarat] is a stand-alone case and we don't have any [other] proposal at present," Joint Secretary of the Home Ministry B. Bhamathi told reporters here.

The Centre's move was seen by some parties as politically motivated, especially in view of the coming Assembly polls in U.P. Asked whether there was any precedent for such relief, she said this was in tune with the package given to victims of anti-Sikh riots.
