G.S. Amur, Lalitha Naik among those chosen for State awards

BANGALORE: The noted literary critic G.S. Amur and the former Minister and writer B.T. Lalitha Naik are among the seven distinguished persons in the fields of art and music who have been selected for the awards instituted by the State Government.

The awards are for 2006 and they are the Pampa Award, the Dana Chintamani Award, the Venkatappa Award, the Jakanachari Award, the Janapada Award, the Kanaka-Purandara Award and the Santashishunala Sharief Award. All the awards come with a purse of Rs. 1 lakh, a memento, a shawl and a citation.

Karnataka Ratna

Announcing the awards here on Monday, Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad told presspersons that it was a great honour for the Government to confer the Karnataka Ratna Award on Siddaganga Math pontiff Shivakumara Mahaswami. The award would be presented to him on April 1 to mark his birth centenary.

The monk is revered in the State for helping thousands of poor students pursue their education. The award includes a gold medal weighing 50 gm.

Dr. Amur, who has written books related to Kannada literature, has been selected for the Pampa Award, named after the first Kannada poet laureate. The award will be presented at the Banavasi Utsav on April 7. A committee headed by the noted Kannada novelist S.L. Byrappa selected Dr. Amur for the award.

The Dana Chintamani Award for women goes to Ms. Lalitha Naik. Ms. Naik, born in 1945, has many literary works to her credit. A committee headed by Veena Shanteshwara selected her for the award.

Balakrishna Karverappa Hubli, 85, of Belgaum has been selected for the Venkatappa Award for his contribution in the field of painting. He was a member of the Karnataka Lalithakala Academy between 1982 and 1990. He received the Kannada Rajyotsava Award in 1996. A panel headed by Vijaya Sindura selected him for the award.

The noted sculptor Bilikere Narayanachar Channappacharya, 71, of Mysore has been selected for the Jakanachari Award. He has carved idols of deities for several temples. A committee headed by C. Siddalingaiah selected him for the award.

Eighty-year-old folk artiste Eshwarappa Gurappa Angadi has been selected for the Janapada Award. He was a recipient of the Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Award in 1992. A committee headed by Somashekara Imrapura selected Mr. Angadi for the award.

The Kanaka-Purandara Award goes to the nonagenarian classical singer V. Ramarathnam. He has held concerts in various cities. He was a member of the Board of Studies of Bangalore, Mysore and Tirupathi Venkateshwara universities.

A committee headed by B.S.S. Kaushik selected Mr. Ramarathnam for the award.

The Santashishunala Sharief Award-winner is Sugama Sangeetha artiste C.K. Tara. She was born in 1933 in Chitradurga and won the Kannada Rajyotsava Award in 1997. A committee headed by Eshwarappa G. Minaji selected her for the award.
