NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand continued to gain ground as he defeated Francisco Pons Vallejo 2-0 and moved to the second spot in the Amber blindfold and rapid chess tournament in Monaco on Sunday. Anandis now 1.5 points away from the overall leader, Vladimir Kramnik. The results (eighth round): Blindfold: Viswanathan Anand (4) bt Francisco Pons Vallejo (Esp, 1.5); Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 3.5) lost to Peter Svidler (Rus, 5.5); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 5) drew with Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 3); Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 7.5) bt Boris Gelfand (Isr, 5); Alexander Morozevich (Rus, 4.5) bt Peter Leko (Hun, 3); Loek van Wely (Ned, 1.5) lost to Levon Aronian (Arm, 4).
