Demand water for tail-end regions

  • Farmers concerned over withering crop
  • Traffic comes to a halt due to rasta roko

KARIMNAGAR: Irate farmers of SRSP command area staged a massive `rasta roko' on the busy Rajiv Rahadhari near Maqdhoompur village in Karimnagar mandal on Monday demanding the authorities to release water from the project to the tail-end regions.

Cutting across party lines, all-parties sarpanches, MPTC members and farmers assembled in large numbers and staged a rasta roko on the busy road demanding the SRSP authorities to release water to the tail-end regions of the D-89 canal of the project. The farmers stated that their crop viz. maize, which is in seeding stage and paddy, started withering due to non-release of water to these regions.

    Withering crop

Under the `varabandi' (weekly once) scheme, the tail-end region farmers of Magdhoompur, Cherlabuthkur, Narayanarapalle, Sambaiahpalle, Gollapalli villages were not receiving adequate water for their crops. Subsequently, the paddy and maize crops have started withering due to the prevailing heat-wave conditions.

Due to the rasta roko, the traffic came to a grinding halt on the busy road. The police rushed to the spot and pacified the agitating farmers to call off their stir and also summoned the SRSP authorities to the spot. Following an assurance from the SRSP official (DE) about the release of water to the tail-end regions, the farmers have called off their agitation.

BJP leader B Jaganmohan Rao, Narayanaraopalle sarpanch Raji Reddy, Cherlabuthkur MPTC member B. Tirupathi Goud, Prabhakar Reddy, M. Anjaiah, Srinivas Goud and others were also present.
