Man allegedly kills mother, brother; then commits suicide

Staff Reporter

The family was said to be going through a financial crisis

NEW DELHI: In a bizarre case, a 35-year-old man allegedly electrocuted his mother and younger brother and then committed suicide in their house at Panchsheel Garden here on Monday.

According to the police, Sanjay Jhamb first electrocuted his 60-year-old mother Kaushalya Devi and 31-year-old brother Anjay Jhamb and then committed suicide in a similar fashion. Both brothers were unmarried and lived with their mother.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Jaspal said the Police Control Room was informed of three bodies lying in a house by a neighbour around 1-50 p.m.

Though the exact reason for the tragedy was not immediately known, the family was said to be passing through a financial crisis after their cut-piece cloth shop in New Seelampur Market was demolished during the recent Municipal Corporation of Delhi drive. "After the shop was demolished, the family was tense as it was not left with any regular means of livelihood. They had sold their house and bought a shop in Rohtak near Delhi and were about to shift," said Subhash Chander, Sanjay's uncle.

The tragedy came to light when a property dealer reached the house in the afternoon. "He knocked at the door several times but there was no response. Eventually Sanjay opened the door. When the dealer stepped inside, he found two bodies lying in a room. He came out running and raised an alarm. At this, Sanjay bolted the door from inside. When the police broke open the door, they found all of them dead in the room," said a neighbour, adding that Sanjay was found dead on a chair clutching a live wire.

The family had had strained relations with most of their neighbours. "The woman frequently got into quarrels with her neighbours over petty issues. She had even filed complaints against the neighbours. The family was virtually ostracised and was not invited to any neighbourhood functions. Even their relatives were never seen visiting them," said a neighbour.

The police are awaiting the post-mortem report to know the exact cause of death.
