A semantic makeover

What's in a name? The bard might have asked. But the speakers of a seminar organised by the Department of Vocational Higher Secondary Education in the city on Tuesday strongly felt that a semantic makeover can do a world of good to the `poor image' the term `vocational education' had in the eyes of the public.

`Vocational education' had failed to catch the imagination of the people in the State, they said.

The alternative suggested was `technical and further education,' a terminology currently in vogue in Australia, one of the leading countries in the field of vocational education. But whether the term would strike a chord with the political bosses remains to be seen.
