Travellers on unfamiliar routes often depend on display boards in front of shops rather than road signage to identify a location. The Department of Local Self-Government has now issued an order making it mandatory for all shops and commercial establishments to carry the place name on their display boards. Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said the absence of place names on shop display boards was making it difficult for travellers to identify locations. The order directed all local bodies to renew the licence for commercial institutions only if the place name was featured on the display board. Another order issued by the department last week insists on an undertaking from shops on adherence to the ban on sale of plastic carry-bags and disposable cups less than 30 microns thick. Trade licence for shops will be renewed only if such an undertaking is provided.
