`Coalition politics takes root in India'

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Political coalitions have proved themselves capable of stable governance in India, E. Sreedharan, director, Centre of Indian Studies, Pennsylvania University, U.S., has said.

He was delivering a lecture organised in connection with the golden jubilee of the Department of Political Science, University of Kerala, here on Tuesday.

Mr. Sreedharan said coalitions had come to define the very character of Indian politics. The Common Minimum Programme and the political coordination committee had improved the political stability of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre.

He, however, said the mismatch between the voting percentage and the number of seats was still a destabilising factor.

Presiding over the function, Head of the Department G. Gopakumar said multi-party alliances were gaining strength in the State. "The situation is such that a party that is not a member of an alliance has no political future in the State.

That is why the BJP has failed to open its account yet," he said.

Faculty member A. Basheer also addressed the gathering.
