Council passes Appropriation Bill

BANGALORE: The Legislative Council on Tuesday passed the Karnataka Appropriation Bill 2007, which seeks Rs. 5,98,41,694 out of the Consolidated Fund for the financial year 2006-07 through supplementary estimates, after a marathon debate.

The Opposition Congress commented that the estimates only reflected the lack of financial discipline and planning.

Minister's remarks termed irresponsible

Bangalore: Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy is again in the news, and this time it is for making a pointed reference to the religion of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting in Hassan recently. The matter was raised in the Legislative Assembly during Zero Hour on Tuesday.

Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh and the former Minister B. Shivaram termed his remarks irresponsible. Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were vengeful towards her as she was responsible for the defeat of the party at the Centre.

The Speaker Krishna ended the matter by asking the Congress to give a notice for a discussion on the subject. — Staff Reporter

CITU, other groups plan protest

BANGALORE: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha and other organisations have decided to hold protest demonstrations in district headquarter cities on April 18 against the "anti-people and anti-farmer policies" of the Government.

Representatives of the organisations told presspersons here on Tuesday that a State-level convention will be held on April 2 here in this regard. — Staff Reporter

Teachers want services regularised

BANGALORE: Teachers appointed on contract in Morarji and Navodaya Residential Schools in the State have urged the Government to regularise their services.

President of the Karnataka State Morarji/Navodaya Residential Principals and Teachers Association M. Vijay told presspersons here on Tuesday that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had promised that their services would be regularised. He threatened that the teachers would resort to begging for two days at City Market and in the Majestic area if orders were not issued by April 3 to regularise their services. — Staff Reporter

Kalam to open seer's centenary

TUMKUR: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is scheduled to open the two-day "Siddanganga Guruvandana Mahotsav" here on April 8. The former Tumkur MP G.S. Basavaraju told presspersons here on Monday the swamiji would complete 99 years on April 1. The State Government would present him the "Karnataka Ratna" that day. SIT's summer fest

TUMKUR: "Halcyon-2007" - a three-day summer festival of Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur, — will begin here on Thursday. SIT principal Basavarajaiah and chairman of its cultural committee S.M. Shashidhar told presspersons that the objective of the festival was to provide opportunities to students from different parts of the country and abroad to come together, interact with one another, and exhibit their talent. Rain continues in Bellary

Hassan witnesses heavy mist

HASSAN: There was heavy mist in Hassan on Tuesday. The visibility was very poor at 7 a.m., which cleared only after 9 a.m. Buses were seen operating with headlights during the day. Despite the onset of summer, it is cool during the mornings while at noon temperature shoots up to 35 degree Celsius. — Staff Correspondent

Free cancer detection clinic

MYSORE: A free cancer detection clinic will be conducted at Preethi Cancer Centre at Lakshmipuram in the city on March 29.

According to a press statement, patients suffering from abnormal bleeding, swelling, lump or hardness in any part of the body, change of voice, difficulty in swallowing or sore throat have been advised to undergo a check up. Investigations and treatment will be provided at a concessional cost to patients with cancer.

Bird adopted at Mysore Zoo

MYSORE: A native of Andhra Pradesh K. Sasikalalore has adopted a small bird of Mysore Zoo for a period of two years from April 27, 2007 to April 26, 2007 under the Adoption of Animals scheme.

According to a press statement from executive director of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Dr. Sasikalalore paid Rs. 1,000 as adoption fee. — Staff Correspondent.

Award

PANAJI: Milind J. Mahale, vice-chairman of the Goa Recruitment and Employment Society (GRES), has been awarded the life-time udyog achievement award by the Delhi-based Economic Growth Society of India.

The GRES is an agency that supplies contract labour to the State Government. The society is all set to diversify its activities to supply contract labour in the lower category to private sector, Mr. Mahale said on Tuesday. — Special Correspondent

Temple renovation

HASSAN: Minister for Endowment and Muzrai Nagaraj Shetty said Rs. 6 crore is set aside for rejuvenating and developing 1,500 ancient temples in the State besides releasing funds for providing salary for archaks working in 26,000 temples. Addressing presspersons at Arsikere, he said the Government had formed the "Ithihasika Karnataka Samskruthi Samrakshana Samiti" for construction of temples and prayer halls and released Rs. 10 crore for the purpose. — Staff Correspondent

Crocodile caught

BIJAPUR: In a joint operation with villagers, Forest Department staff caught a 12-ft-long crocodile that had strayed into Katarki village on the bank of the Ghataprabha in Bilagi taluk of Bagalkot district on Monday. Hanmanth Ramappa Nadkattina, a resident of the village, had a narrow escape from the crocodile. It had reportedly crawled up very close to where he was sleeping. However, his alert dog had woken him up by barking. He ran to safety. Deputy Conservator of Forests Girish Hosur said the crocodile was caught the next day at noon, and later released into the Alamatti Reservoir. — Staff Correspondent

Site inspected

BIJAPUR: Airports Authority of India official Bhaskar Rao on Tuesday inspected the site of proposed airport at Madbhavi village near here. Mr. Rao, who came to study the technical feasibility of the site, told presspersons that he would give his report to the authority within a week. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin said the Government had released Rs. 5.5 crore for land acquisition. — Staff Correspondent
