Six MLAs get more time to declare assets

Staff Reporter

Deadline extended on representation from three MLAs

  • Criminal cases will be filed if they fail to file declaration
  • They have been given time till 3.30 p.m. on Thursday

BANGALORE: Six MLAs, including the former Minister D.K. Shivakumar, have been given two days' time to file their declaration of assets and liabilities before the Lokayukta failing which criminal cases will be filed against them.

Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde extended the deadline following a representation by three MLAs. "I have given them time till 3.30 p.m. on Thursday. If they fail to submit the declarations we will go ahead in filing cases before the jurisdictional magistrates," Mr. Hegde told The Hindu .

The Lokayukta has decided to invoke provisions of Section 176 of the Indian Penal Code (omitting to give information to public servants by persons legally bound to give it).

The five others who face possible action are Mahadeva, Muniyappa Muddappa B., Shivashankarappa T.H, Sudhakar D. and Venkatesh K. The action comes in addition to the action already initiated by the Lokayukta against Channapatna MLA C.P. Yogeshwar for filing a false declaration of assets and liabilities.

Mr. Hegde said eight legislators had failed to declare their assets and liabilities, even after the Lokayukta published eight months ago the list of legislators who had not done so.

"The legislators have failed to perform their mandatory duty, which is an offence under Section 176 of the Indian Penal Code," the Lokayukta said.
